25 Things I Learned Hiking to Everest Base Camp

If you hike everyday you won’t be as sore Not showering for week isn’t a big deal Tea and cookies are the best post-hike food I’m petrified of suspension bridges Cake tastes better at 15,000 feet Coffee, who needs coffee Don’t waste the mornings Only God can predict the weather Dal Bhat = 24 hoursContinue reading “25 Things I Learned Hiking to Everest Base Camp”

Photo Tour: Retracing our Steps to Everest

After days of upward climbing, summitting Kala Pattar and reaching Everest Base Camp, my team and I finally turned around and began the three day journey back down the mountain. With 35+ miles to cover, we hiked eight hours a day to make it back to Lukla and our final goodbyes to the Himalayas.

Everest Base Camp Hike: Kala Pattar

With only 200 feet to climb over boulders and rocks, my body gave up. My legs were sore from the eight days of constant hiking, my lungs tired from 12,000 feet of elevation gain, and my body exhausted from little sleep. I couldn’t go any further. And I couldn’t think of anything else to doContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike: Kala Pattar”

Everest Base Camp

With only a couple meters of elevation left to gin, the bright colored tents started to appear admist the colorless landscape. Tucked in the clouds, mountain rubble and white-blue glacier, the tents popped with viberence like jelly beans in a sandbox. A grown-up’s playground, Everest Base Camp -and our goal – was in sight. FromContinue reading “Everest Base Camp”

Everest Base Camp Hike: Dingboche to Louboche

This stretch of the hike was one of the most beautiful. From the first steps out of Dingboche, the mountains surrounded our trail. As we moved north, more appeared and appeared with their white peaks poking the azure sky. After lunch we climbed up to the memorial site for hikers who died on Everest’s stormyContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike: Dingboche to Louboche”

Everest Base Camp Hike: Dingboche Acclimation

To further let our bodies adjust to the increasing elevation, we took a second acclimation day in Dingboche. The recommendation for high elevation climbing is to hike high and sleep low. Pushing our bodies a little more on this day, we hiked to a high ridge above the town. Topping out at 5000 meters, theContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike: Dingboche Acclimation”

Everest Base Camp Hike: Tengboche to Dingboche

Hiking in the thin layer of snow in the morning then dry, hot rocks, we gained 600 meters of elevation between Tengboche and Dingboche. Following a trail of yaks, we crossed the infamous bridge that so many paintings and pictures portray with the beautiful Amadablam towering above. Photos can hardly even start to depict howContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike: Tengboche to Dingboche”

Everest Base Camp Hike: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

It’s amazing how the human body can adjust to different climates, landscapes, altitudes and with such grace. A hike that the day before would have left me painfully huffing and puffing for air, this day felt difficult but manageable. Completing the trek to Everest Base Camp takes patience and a willingness to go slow. OurContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche”

Everest Base Camp Hike 1: Lukla to Namche Bazaar

“We’ll be cruising at 16,000 feet,” said the Air Canada flight attendant as we departed for Nepal and the 12 day trek to Everest Base Camp. “We are going to climb higher than that!” said Kyle, my travel partner, as he turned to me with a big grin. Flying in an Twin Otter plane highContinue reading “Everest Base Camp Hike 1: Lukla to Namche Bazaar”
